Alexandra Turner – Licensed to Kick

It’s been a while since we featured Scholes’ high kicking Taekwondo star in the making, Alexandra Turner. Now thirteen and attending Boston Spa School, she’s growing up fast which can only mean bad news for future opponents and good news for Britain’s Olympic hopes in 2020.

Alex has been a fully fledged member of the Cadet Squad of the Team GB Olympic Taekwondo Academy in Manchester for eighteen months now, which basically is the Olympic training camp, where she now trains with current and future Olympic stars.

Recently she was invited to train before the preliminary ranking event for the 2016 Olympics where she spent a bit of time kicking 2012 Olympian Martin Stamper in the head. She’s also rubbed shoulders with gold medallist and world champion Jade Jones and although she’s not been as active in competitions as previously, she is receiving the best training and tuition, possibly in the world.

Most weekends are spent at the Academy in Manchester and chances are, if she’s not there, she’s on a training camp somewhere.t enter as many tournaments now but she’s entering the elite ones, where she’s up against older kids. She recently lost out to a girl two years older than her in the British Nationals but a silver is still pretty good considering her age. The training she’s getting both in Doncaster and Manchester is absolutely top class.”

Last word to Alex, “It’s knackering but I’ve had the same dream since I was seven years old, to compete in the Olympics. There is a lot of travelling to Doncaster a few times a week, Manchester on a weekend and various tournaments plus there’s the added expense of international tournaments, I do really  need sponsors and am asking all local businesses if they  could possibly help me reach my goal. Can I go now? I’ve

Alexandra recently took time out from training to attend the Leeds Sports Awards where she was highly commended for the Under 14 sports person award and got to hang about with Nicola Adams and… er Dickie Bird.

Quite clearly Alex has already achieved a lot in her young life but the best thing about her is she is so grounded and just takes everything in her stride. And dare we say it, she’s really nice, down to earth and sweet. But then, if you watch a video of her in action…well… it just doesn’t seem like the same person. This girl is licensed to kick!

Proud Mum and Dad Nigel and Cathy are still at a loss to explain where it comes from.

We’ve no idea but there’s no doubt in our mind she has what it takes to reach as far as she wants to take it. She might not enter as many tournaments now but she’s entering the elite ones, where she’s up against older kids. And off she went to study Regan and Breshnev etc but you really do get the impression she’d be happier knocking their heads together!
