Garry Chappelow was tragically killed, at the age of 59, in a traffic accident in 2002; His death was marked by 70 tribute notices in the local press. Garry loved all sports especially rugby and he was always helping out at amateur rugby games, running the touchline, water carrier, cleaning out the changing rooms etc. He was always cheerful and never had a bad word to say about anyone, Garry Chappelow was ‘simply the best’. Over 800 people attended Garry’s funeral and in excess of £1800 was collected. It was suggested that a fund be set up in his name, so The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund was formed.

Since 2002, the fund has gone from strength to strength with a hard working volunteer fundraising committee of eight people. The fundraising committee organise five events a year, which are a Sportsman Dinner a Valentines Dinner Dance,  a fun night at a local club and Grand National Day. All the events are well attended and help raise much-needed funds.

Another fund raising event takes place in August, when The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund, in partnership with the Leeds Rugby Foundation and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, hold a Children’s Day Carnival at the Headingley Carnegie Stadium. This attracts almost 5000 people, and it is always a fun filled day.
The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund committee receive written applications from sports teams and individuals requesting funds for things like new kit, new equipment, and various other things. Each application received is discussed by the committee, which can award a maximum of £600 per request. The fund has so far donated in the region of £90,000 to amateur junior sports teams and individuals. The fund is well supported by a handful of local firms as well as generous friends. Donations made by the fund, so far have included: – boxing, karate and rugby clubs, football and cricket teams, cheerleaders, gymnastics, martial arts, dance groups and tennis players.
The Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund has received several ‘thank you’ letters from grateful recipients; some include photographs of their team wearing the new kit, which they purchased with funding from us. Local east Leeds teams to receive a donation include, Amaranth, Colton and Whitkirk.
The fund requires help with sponsorship for the fund raising events, raffle prizes and items to auction. If you and your friends/colleagues would like to attend the fund raising events, or if you can help in anyway, or if you require any further information please contact the Fund secretary Mr Les Marshall.
