Lee Murtagh – Back to the Future

I’ll begin this issue with Sam Smith’s defence of her MBC International Masters Bronze belt against former Big Brother contestant Angel McKenzie last month at the Pryzm. The fight went the full eight rounds and was just what Sam needed. Angel came with bags of experience and it showed, although I don’t think there was ever any doubt Sam was on top throughout the fight. However, she had to box for every point, there was no time to ease off during the fight, every minute of every round was competitive. So Sam scored an impressive points win, her first pro fight which went the distance after winning her previous five by knockouts or stoppages.

So where or what next for Sam? Well, my next show is at the Aria Suite, Woodhouse Street, and Sam is up against the Greek fighter Christina Linardatou. I say Greek, she’s actually from the Dominican Republic but now lives in Athens. This fight is a title fight for the Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) International female lightweight belt. The UBF is an American based organisation and although it might not be the biggest and best known organisation, is often seen as a stepping stone for European fighters in America. So hopefully that’s where a good performance could lead for Sam although we will take nothing for granted against Christina who boast a similar Pro record to Sam.

Sophie Varley came out with a bang at the Pryzm to put in a powerful ‘Tyson’ like performance as she defended her EBF English title in one minute twenty seconds. There really was no stopping her and her performance earned her a crack at the EBF British title against Newcastle’s Megan Hall.

As mentioned earlier, my next show takes place at the Aria Suite on Woodhouse Street which for me is a new venue. It’s not a night club so kids are welcome which made it much more attractive for me than the usual night clubs as I can return to grass roots with families in the audience. I’ve also got Jody ‘Entertainment’ Miekle on the bill, who seems to be coming extremely popular in these parts defending his MBC Cruiserweight International Masters Bronze belt against Mayo’s John Waldron and Alex Ferguson is stepping up a couple of weights to fight for the EBF super middleweight Yorkshire Area title. Also on the bill is former Great Britain rugby player Jodie Wilkinson who won the EBF Northern Area welterweight title in her last fight and will be making her first defence.

On a personal note, I’ll be refereeing in Malta at the end of the month as Maltese heavyweight champion takes on Lee Kellett and then on to Belfast for a WBU international fight before landing in Bethnal Green where I’m reefing Marianne Marston against Mexican Jessica Arreguin Munoz where four titles will be on the line.

You may have seen Bethlehem on Made in Leeds TV, the series reaches a successful end soon although they do seem to have a few repeats on, it’s also spawned Bethlehem on the Road which should be showing Sam’s London debut the other month at York Hall.
